ACS applied materials & interfaces, 13 2 2024 Self-Healing Transparent Poly(dimethyl)siloxane with Tunable Mechanical Properties: Toward Enhanced Aging Materials for Space Applications. Yilmaz D, Du Fraysseix M, Lewandowski S, Perraud S, Ibarboure E, Llevot A, Carlotti S
When exposed to the geostationary orbit, polymeric materials tend to degrade on their surface due to the appearance of cracks. Implementing the self-healing concept in polymers going to space is a new approach to enhancing the lifespan of materials that cannot be replaced once launched. In this study, the elaboration of autonomous self-healing transparent poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) materials resistant to proton particles is presented. The PDMS materials are functionalized with various composi... Abstract

Background: During the COVID-19 pandemic, healthcare professionals focused on identifying the cause of hemodynamic instability in patients and may have neglected to assess pressure injury (PI)-related pain. Although pain is an early indicator of PI development, there has been no systematic evaluation of PI-related pain in patients. Objective: To review nurses' records of PI-related pain in patients who developed PIs during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: This retrospective, descriptive stud... Abstract

Objectives: Septic arthritis (SA) is a serious bacterial infection that must be treated efficiently and timely. The large number of culture-negative cases makes local epidemiological data important. Accordingly, this study aimed to evaluate the etiology, clinical characteristics, and therapeutic approach of SA in children in Turkiye, emphasizing the role of real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) techniques in the diagnosis. Methods: In this multi-center, prospective study, children hospitaliz... Abstract
International journal of surgery (London, England), Volume 109, Issue 12, 1 1 2023, Pages 4057-4061 Predictors for postoperative cranial nerve complications in carotid body tumor resection: a retrospective cohort study. Alimohamad H, Yilmaz D, Marang-van de Mheen PJ, Jansen J, Hamming JF, Schepers A
Introduction: Carotid body tumors (CBTs) are slow-growing benign tumors. Therefore, surgical resection is considered in case of tumor growth. The timing of surgery is of the utmost importance as the risk of iatrogenic surgical complications increases when resecting larger tumors, whereas on the other hand, resections for asymptomatic small CBT should be prevented. The primary aim of this study was to identify which tumor size or dimension is most accurate to predict nerve injury in patients unde... Abstract

Biosensors & bioelectronics, Volume 245, 17 3 2023, Pages 115836 SERS-based pH-Dependent detection of sulfites in wine by hydrogel nanocomposites. Yilmaz D, Miranda B, Lonardo E, Rea I, De Stefano L, De Luca AC
Sulfur dioxide (SO2) and sulfites are well-known additives in winemaking due to their preservative properties. Although they can prevent oxidation and inhibit microbial growth, they pose health risks and require limitations on their use. Consequently, the total level of SO2 is regulated and several quantification strategies have been proposed. The approved detection methods require the extraction of SO2 by heating and/or acid treatment. Then, iodine or acid/base titrations are conducted for the... Abstract

Polycythemia vera (PV) diagnosis remains a difficult task despite various updates in the 2016 World Health Organization (WHO) diagnostic criteria compared to 2008 criteria. This study aimed to examine the biochemical and clinical features of patients diagnosed with PV using the WHO 2016 criteria but would have been missed by the WHO 2008 criteria, and to ascertain the impact of the lowered thresholds on PV diagnosis. A total of 229 patients with suspected myeloproliferative neoplasms were includ... Abstract

The Pediatric infectious disease journal, Volume 42, Issue 9, 30 5 2023, Pages e348-e349 HSV-1 Encephalitis Presenting with Diplopia: Effects of Infection or Autoimmunity? Elvan-Tuz A, Elvan-Tuz A, Kaya-Guner E, Sarioglu FC, Agrali-Eroz N, Baykan M, Karadag-Oncel E, Yilmaz D, Olgac-Dundar N
This report describes a case in which diplopia was developed as a finding of postinfectious anti- N -methyl- d -aspartate receptor encephalitis. Infectious encephalitis, especially herpes simplex virus, is essential as it is one of the triggers of autoimmune encephalitis. Even if the cases present unexpected clinical findings, we should be vigilant in terms of autoimmune processes, such as diplopia seen in our case. Abstract

Molecular biology reports, Volume 50, Issue 7, 25 4 2023, Pages 5871-5877 Association between mannose binding lectin gene polymorphisms and clinical severity of COVID-19 in children. Yilmaz D, Soyoz M, Sahin A, Cerci-Alkac B, Karahan-Coven HI, Ekemen-Keles Y, Ustundag G, Kara-Aksay A, Yilmaz N, Pirim İ
Background: Mannose-binding lectin (MBL) is a member of innate immunity and acts with MASP (MBL-associated serine protease) to activate the lectin pathway of the complement system. MBL gene polymorphisms are associated with susceptibility to infectious diseases. This study investigated whether MBL2 genotype, serum MBL levels, and serum MASP-2 levels affect the course of SARS-CoV-2 infection. Methods and results: Pediatric patients diagnosed with COVID-19 by positive real-time polymerase chain re... Abstract
International journal of molecular sciences, Volume 24, Issue 10, 18 3 2023, Pages 8948 Hfe Actions in Kupffer Cells Are Dispensable for Hepatic and Systemic Iron Metabolism. Knoop P, Yilmaz D, Paganoni R, Steele-Perkins P, Gruber A, Akdogan B, Zischka H, Leopold K, Vujić Spasić M
Mutations in the HFE/Hfe gene cause Hereditary Hemochromatosis (HH), a highly prevalent genetic disorder characterized by elevated iron deposition in multiple tissues. HFE acts in hepatocytes to control hepcidin expression, whereas HFE actions in myeloid cells are required for cell-autonomous and systemic iron regulation in aged mice. To address the role of HFE specifically in liver-resident macrophages, we generated mice with a selective Hfe deficiency in Kupffer cells (HfeClec4fCre). The analy... Abstract
